Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the etiological and pathological basis of diseases.
Course contents
Introduction to General Pathology Study. The state of health. Pathological events. Aetiology and pathogenesis.
Aetiology pathogenic agents: a) Intrinsic to the organism - definition. B) extrinsic to the body (environmental pathology): 1) physical, chemical and biological agents. Cellular Pathology: Necrosis and Apoptosis. Intracellular and extracellular degenerations. Acute and chronic inflammation: definitions, general features and historical facts. Acute inflammation: vascular changes, cellular events, chemical mediators, morphological types, systemic effects and outcomes. Chronic inflammation: definitions, causes, morphological characteristics. The macrophage: activation, accumulation mechanisms, released products. Chronic granulomatous inflammation. Healing processes: resolution, repair and regeneration. Cell growth and differentiation abnormalities. Tumors: Definition and Background. Nomenclature and classification criteria, grading and staging systems. Clinical, biological and morphological malignancy. Neoplastic invasiveness, metastasis, angiogenesis, tumor markers.
