Some basic notions and techniques of Statistical Inference will be recalled at the beginning of the course. Nonetheless, students will considerably benefit from some familiarity with problems of point estimation, interval estimation and hypothesis testing as they are commonly illustrated in introductory Statistics courses
Learning outcomes
The course aims at providing basic understanding of statistical data analysis and modelling using a hands-on approach.

Lectures are complemented by an introduction to the statistical software R.
Course contents
- Linear regression
- Classification trees and smoothing splines
- Logistic regression
- Principal components
- Cluster Analysis
Teaching methods
Class lectures consist in the projection and discussion of slides, which are made available online to students for download. The statistical methodologies that are described during lectures are always motivated by specific examples with real data.
