The global aims of the course "Disease Control and Eradication" are to prepare students to a broad understanding of the most common infectious diseases and their clinical management, covering viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases. Global epidemiology of the major infectious diseases and public health implications will also be covered. The Course id divided into following parts: i) Clinical Epidemiology (Prof. MG Comelli); ii) Infectious Diseases A (Profs. MU Mondelli and R Bruno); iii) Infectious Diseases B (Profs. C Filice, E Brunetti); iv) The Science of Disease Control and Eradication (Profs. R Bruno, E Brunetti, C Filice, V Meroni).
At the end of the course, students should be able to recognize the typical clinical presentations of major infectious diseases and to develop a basic knowledge of the main treatment regimens.
Viral Hepatitis: HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV

Parasitic: Leishmaniasis, Strongyloidosis, Schistosomiasis, Filariasis.

Invasive fungal infections: Candidiasis, Aspergillosis.

The Febrile Patient: Temperature Regulation, Definition of Fuo, Causes of Fuo. Laboratory Studies in Fuo. Treatment of Fever.

Gastrointestinal Infections: Escherichia Coli, Shigella, Campylobacter, Entamoeba histolytica, Salmonella, Schistosoma, Vibrio Infections.

SIRS and Sepsis: Prevalence, Definitions, Pathogenesis, Clinical Manifestations, Diagnosis, Treatment.

Diagnosis of Perinatal Infections /Infections in Pregnancy: Toxoplasma, Rubella, CMV, Diagnosis of Neonatal Syphilis. Parvovirus B19.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Bone, Joint and Soft Tissue Infections: Osteomyelitis, Prosthetic Joint Infections, Fasciitis, Septic Arthritis.

HIV Infection: Epidemiology, Definitions, Pathogenesis, Clinical Manifestations, Opportunistic Infection, Diagnosis, Treatment.

Infections of the Central Nervous System: Acute and Chronic Meningitis, Encephalitis.

Tuberculosis as seen from the infectious disease specialist. TB, MDR, XDR, TDR Mycobacteria. Epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment.

Malaria: Diagnosis and Treatment / Prophylaxis in International Travellers.

Migrant health

Trypanosomiasis.

Antibiotic stewardship and infection control.
